With the release of version 1.2.0, Torquemada the Inquisitor will be
a commercial product, available only by direct purchase from Greg
Swann at the address below. The last freeware version of Torquemada
is version 1.1.0, available on CompuServe (GO DTPForum; Library 5;
DOW TORQUE.SEA) and other commercial services and bulletin board
systems.
Torquemada is a Macintosh bulk search and replace utility. It
operates on files of type 'TEXT' and incorporates a number of
features to facilitate the wholesale revision of text. Among these
are more than 30 "wildcards" of various stripes, which make it
possible to write very elaborate search and replace strings. Strings
are stored in sets of up to twenty strings per set. Up to 32 set
files can be deployed at once, yielding a total of 640 search and
replace strings. Under System Seven, up to 32 set files and up to 128
text files can be dropped on the program's icon; each set will be run
against each text file in an unattended batch.
Torquemada is one of many text-processing utilities by Greg Swann.
Among the others are:
* XP8, an intelligent 'TEXT' to Quark XPress Tags conversion utility.
XP8 performs a number of enhancements to the text, including
paragraph reformatting, character-set translation, and the very best
quote-conversion available in any software application. XP8 is
marketed as shareware; an inhibited version can be obtained from
CompuServe (GO DTPForum; Library 5; DOW XP8.SEA) and other commercial
services and bulletin board systems. The current commerical release
is version 1.0.5, which implements a number of improvements,
including full support for Em Software's Xtags, "smart" defaults, and
"drag and drop" under Macintosh System Seven.
* Mark My Words!, a word-processor-to-tagged-file conversion utility
currently in development. This program will open native-format
word-processor files and convert them intelligently to a number of
tagged file formats (such as Quark's XPress Tags or Em Software's
Xtags). This will be a commercial product, available only by direct
purchase from Greg Swann at the address below.
* A large host of freeware text-processing utilities, including
Caesura (intelligent file splitting), CISify (XPress Tags to
CompuServe translation), Cat o' Seven Tails (drag and drop file
concatenation), and WordLess (MicroSoft Word 4.0/5.0 to plain text).
These utilities encircle a common enemy - onerous manual labor in the
preparation of files for desktop publishing. In the coming months
they will be integrated into a single stand-alone application, an
as-yet-unnamed word-processor optimized for desktop publishing. This
editor will permit either interactive or batch editing of 'TEXT'
files, and will interpret a number of native-format word-processor
files, writing to a number of tagged file formats. Torquemada will
serve as the search and replace engine in this editor. Interactively,
it will be possible to run Torquemada-like searches over a range of
text.
But: this editor will retain the standing commitment to batch
operations. Sets of XP8-like preferences and Torquemada-like search
and replace strings will be implemented, and it will be possible to
specify a host of grossly repetitive actions to be performed on files
in a drag and drop batch. In this way, well-engineered text can be
prepared for import into desktop publishing applications with
virtually no manual intervention.
Torquemada is being taken commercial in anticipation of these events.
A number of people have "pre-registered" earlier versions of
Torquemada, even though the software has been freeware to date. With
the release of version 1.2.0, an upgrade path is being established
for XP8, Torquemada and for the above-named
word-processor-to-tagged-file conversion utility.
You will be entitled to a 25% discount on the price of the editor,
when it is released, for each of these utilities you have purchased
and registered. In other words, if you own XP8, your discount will be
25%. If you own XP8 and Torquemada, it will be 50%. And if you own
all three, you will be entitled to a 75% discount.
Torquemada version 1.2.0 will feature these enhancements:
* New "wildcards" to gain greater control over the extent of searches
* The ability to "type" the contents of Torquemada's four
"wildstrings"
* Improvements to the user interface
* More intelligent drag and drop performance under System Seven
Torquemada version 1.2.0 will be licensed under these terms:
Single user license: $50
Two to ten licenses: $45 each
Eleven or more licenses: $40 each
To purchase Torquemada version 1.2.0, send a check or money order
